William Frederick Prideaux 1874 - 1918

William Frederick Prideaux was born in 1874 in Benalla, Benalla Rural City County, VIC Australia to Richard Ellis Prideaux and Ruth Ann (Jenkins) Prideaux, and had siblings Walter Jenkins Prideaux, Rupert Ellis Prideaux, Richard John Prideaux, Harold Henry Prideaux, Mary Amelia (Prideaux) Tate, Kate Elizabeth (Prideaux) Sands, and Emily Ann (Prideaux) Carnie. He married Minnie Isabella Mary (Pressley) Prideaux in 1900, and they were married until death separated them. He had children Evaline Minnie (Prideaux) McIntosh, Raymond Ellis Prideaux, Ruth Prideaux, Lily Prideaux, James Prideaux, Harold Prideaux, Ronald Prideaux, and Mary Prideaux. William Prideaux died at age 43 years old on July 30, 1918 in Katandra, Greater Shepparton City County.

In 1884, he was merely 10 years old when on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
