William Victor Leckie of Ballarat, City of Ballarat County, VIC Australia was born on January 13, 1908 in Alfredton to Elizabeth Maud (Sargent) Leckie and William John George Leckie. He had siblings Ivy May Leckie, Violet Maud Leckie, Ethel Mavis Leckie, Seymour Leckie, Walter Leonard Leckie, Selena Leckie, Alan Ellis Leckie, and Albert Edwin Leckie. William Leckie married Sylvia Florence Adelaide Maud Sing in 1931, and died at age 62 years old on December 27, 1970 in Ballarat.

In 1908, in the year that William Victor Leckie was born, a 7.1 earthquake and the resulting tsunami killed 70,000 to 100,000 people in southern Italy and Sicily. The earthquake, lasting 30 to 40 seconds, occurred in the Strait of Messina which was between the region of Calabria (at the "toe" of Italy) and the island of Sicily and destruction from it occurred in a 186 mile radius. It was the most destructive earthquake ever to hit Europe.

In 1919, by the time he was merely 11 years old, the "Black Sox Scandal" rocked baseball fans during the World Series. Eight players on the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the World Series, thus allowing the Cincinnati Reds to win, and making money off of the losses. All of the players were found not guilty by a jury but the fallout lasted for decades. The players were banned from baseball even though they were found innocent.
