Early photographs took sooo long to take it was impossible to hold a smile. Also life often pretty sucked. Sanitation was so bad, and with no antibiotics, vacines etc. you would have lots of children that would surely die, you would probably die soon... after a very hard life.
When I was younger and saw these old pictures I thought why aren't these people smiling? As I got older and into genealogy I soon realized that they did not live the easy lifestyle that we fortunate to live.
You are so lucky to have these family photos. My family lost a lot during the Blitz. Bombed out twice ! So a lot of stuff was burnt, missing or blown to Kingdom come ! Still, at least no one was killed ..
