Benjamin was born in Kybartai, in present day Lithuania, and came to the US in 1899 with his father, mother, and 6 of his 9 siblings. He settled in New York, and lived most of his life in Brooklyn. He worked as a pattern cutter in the ladies garment industry. He married May Berger and had three children (Harriet, Herbert, Sheldon).
