Summary

The Keilson family and name is primarily from eastern Europe, present day Lithuania. The spelling varies, and can be found as Keilson, Kielson, Kelson, Keilsohn, Kelzon, and Kalson

History

It is worth remembering that most people in Europe, including Jews, did not have surnames until about the early 1800s, when they were required by Napoleon's armies that invaded and controlled those areas for a while. That said, there are birth records from Lithuania/Poland that include the surname Kelzon from the very late 1700s.

Name Origin

While the Keilson name sounds Scandinavian, most Keilson people listed on Ancient Faces are from two families originating in present day Lithuania (Szaki and Sereje). There are at least two hypotheses regarding the Keilson surname. The simplest one is that an early female ancestor named Kaylie or Kaila had several sons, and they were identified as so-and-so, Kaylie's son, which ultimately became Keilson.
A second origin story is that the name derives from the Jewish prayer after eating. There is a phrase ki ayn zon, which translates as God provides for you. The story is that poor people would bring empty pots to a well-off family on Friday nights, for the Sabbath (where cooking is not allowed) because this family was able to afford to keep fires going all day. When they returned on Saturday night to take their pots back, they were filled with food. Hence, the family was providing food for the community. This is probably a made up story, but it sounds nice.
