My mom's side of the family is Swedish (and still lives in Sweden) and she instilled in me lots of Swedish heritage and traditions which has made me who I am today. My dad's side of the family is German and Irish and the most likely the side of the family I get all my freckles from. Family is so important, and welcome everyone to discover more about them, their history, and share about their loved ones who make up the history of who we are!

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.

May was born in Ivye, then in Russia but now in Belarus. She was one of 12 children born to Joseph David Berger. Her mother was Rachel Bakst. Her birth name was Mirian Devora or Merke, but she changed it to May when she came to the US in 1907, to be more American. She married Ben Keilson and had three children. May was a very strong minded and tough person, engaged in politics, well read and a believer in women's rights.

Sheldon Keilson
Sheldon was born in Brooklyn in 1927, and for his entire life he thought that Brooklyn was the best place in the world to live, even after he moved to Baltimore to be closer to his children. He never forgave the Dodgers moving from Brooklyn. From his earliest years he knew he wanted to study electrical engineering, and ended up spending his career in the field, first as an engineer with the Redstone Rocket program, then in the defense industry, and finally with the New York phone company. He enlisted in the Navy while still in high school, during World War Two, and entered the service in 1944 immediately after graduating high school. He went to basic training in Michigan, was posted to Treasure Island near San Francisco, and was scheduled to ship out for the invasion of Japan before the war ended. He was a very smart, logical, and consistent person, who always tried to do the right thing, loved his family, made the effort to stay in touch with friends and cousins for his entire life.

Chaim Keilson
Chaim Keilson was born in Sereje, in present day Lithuania, in 1850. His parents were Shimon Leib Keilson and Chana Riva. The married in 1849, according to Lithuania Archives civil records. Chaim was the first of many children, 7 of whom lived into adulthood, and all of whom emigrated to the US in the late 1800s-early 1900s. Chaim worked as a kosher butcher. He married Etta Zlotta (Sachs) who was originally from Vilnius, Lithuania. They moved to Kybartai, a border town between then Russia and East Prussia, on the Neiman River. They had 9 children, all of whom came to the US. In addition to his formal job, Chaim worked as a people smuggler, bringing Jews from Russia across the border into East Prussia/Germany, then to the Netherlands, where he would help them book passage to the UK or the US to escape religious persecution, pogroms, and economic poverty. Finally, in September 1899 the entire family arrived in New York.
