Charles was the child of Edward C. Hurst and Sarah Melissa Martin. He was born in Camden Co. Missouri. He was married to Evalena Ashmore and moved to Oklahoma to work on the railroad. Charles lost his team of horses in a poker game and never went home again out of shame. He went back to Missouri and Evalena married Alva Cramer.
