Charles E. Holbrook Jacks Creek - Etna Greene, Indiana 1931 - 2023
MENTONE – Charles E. Holbrook Sr., 92, of rural Etna Green, went home to be with Jesus surrounded by his family at 5:57 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, at his daughter’s residence.
Charles was born on July 26, 1931, in Jacks Creek, Floyd County, Ky., to the late William “Bill” and Stella M. Burke Holbrook. He graduated from Wheelwright High School and then further his education at Caney Creek College. He served his country in the U.S. Marines from 1951 to 1953, being honorably discharged as the rank of corporal. On Aug. 31, 1954, in Floyd County, Ky., he married Geneva Wright, who preceded him in death on June 29, 2000.
He worked in the office of the coal mine for Inland Steel and Island Creek Coal Company. Charles and his family moved from Kentucky to Indiana in 1972, and it became their home. He was a sawman and a carpenter for several years. He later worked for DaLite Screen of Warsaw and retired in 2001, after 15 years with the company. He had been a member and deacon of the Joppa Old Regular Baptist Church of Melvin, Ky., and attended Northern Little Dove Church of Pierceton.
He is survived by his daughters: Mary Ann and husband Daniel Green, of Etna Green; Janet Lee and husband Johnny Wadkins, of Warsaw; and Glenda and husband Lou Parmelee, of Tippecanoe; sons, Charles E. Holbrook Jr. and wife Missy, of Warsaw; and Terry Wayne Holbrook and wife Joni, of Bourbon; loving grandchildren: Johnny, Jennifer, Heather, Wayne Edward, Geneva Lynn, Aaron, William Thomas, Charles Dillon and Chase Edward; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Carolyn Gilliam, Cathy and husband Dean Harville, both of Pikeville, Ky.; brothers: James Earl and wife JoAnn Holbrook, of Pikeville; William B. and wife Verniece Holbrook and John Curtis and wife Samantha Holbrook, both of Carlton, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 46 years, Geneva; twin grandsons, Ronald Keith and Kenneth Ray Wadkins; daughter-in-law, Jeanie Holbrook; four sisters: Draxie Bailey, Judith Ann Phillips, Betty Ruth Hobbs and Mary Marie Holbrook; and brothers, Ellis and wife Tiny and Kenneth Wayne.
The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone, with Pastor Gail Law officiating.
The interment will take place in the Mentone Cemetery, Mentone, with military honors performed by the Warsaw American Legion. Visitation hours will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9 at King Memorial Home, Mentone.
