As a teenager Buck worked in the woods and then worked at the Morris Mine prior to serving in the U.S. Army from November 1953 until his Honorable Discharge in October 1955. They drove with friends to local and out of town casinos. Buck and Alice also traveled extensively, visiting many of the National Parks and took several trips to spend time along the Gulf of Mexico. He was an avid fisherman, who loved fishing on Lake Superior and enjoyed two fishing trips to Alaska, and he was a member of Trout Unlimited. Buck enjoyed blueberry picking, baking, and making and teaching others how to make Juustoa - Finnish Squeaky Cheese. Time spent at Schweitzer Basin at the Annala Homestead was also time he cherished.
