This photo was in a scrap book that was given to me following Constance's operatic career. I found this page while googling for information about her. There are quite a few newspaper clippings and photos of her in the scrap book. I'm confused though, because there is another soprano at the back of the book with only a few clippings. Caroline White.
Constance's father was Charles Anthow St. Wardle, 1865-1931 and her mother was Carrie Van Gelder, 1865-1923. She had siblings Gerald, Ralph, Francis, Philip, Alma, Charles II, and Winifred.
In the 1900 federal census, Constance was 4 and living with her family in Catskil NY. Father Charles was 35, mother Carrie was 34, Gerald, Francis, Winifred, Constance, Alma and Philip -ages 1 to 14 were at home. Also in the household were Bettie and Josephine Payne, servants. Father Charles was an insurance agent.
In the 1940 federal census, Constance was 44, a lodger in a home in Rock Hill South Carolina (previously lived in NY), a teacher, had completed 5 years of college, was making $1735/yr, and worked 40 hrs a week.
