Isn't she lovely? Born in 1888, Cora Hulcher died at age 102 in 1990 but her family knows little about her background/family. She lived as a Black woman but was often mistaken for a White woman. Maybe you can help her grandson understand her life.

At those times, even a drop of black blood made you 100% black and therefore looked down upon. Pathetic how little we've progressed.

Beth Pritchard I disagree. In these current times that one drop of black blood is still considered 100% black, but now a source of pride. (as I confirm my DNA ethnicity). Yes. Pride. Now who wants to tell me I'm looked down upon? You?

Thanks for the comments but nothing fruitful as yet. She did not volunteer any information regarding her family when we were kids growing up in Richmond, which was typical for older people at the time. I suppose they had their reasons. Something happened with her parents since her birth on May 4th 1888 to 1900 when she was 12 years old. I surmise that her parents either abandoned her at some point or they died and left her homeless and was taken in by the Houchins family. She does not show up in the 1900 census nor can I locate her birth certificate where she was born in Richmond.
Reply
Her father is Caucasion and her mother's race is unknown. I assume that she was a Black woman, otherwise, why would she identify with and live her life as a Black woman.

Update: Her actual birth name per her Social Security Application is Cora Mary Lupora Hulcher

Cora Hulcher
I am faced with an enigma. My Grandmother was born in 1888 as Cora Hulcher. in Richmond VA. Her birth name was unknown to my family until about 6 years ago when I discovered her marriage record from 1907 to Peele R Brown, wherein she lists her name as Cora Hulcher and her parents as James and Cora Hulcher. She shows the same parents and surname on the birth record for her daughter Goldie Brown in 1909. Fact is, my Grandmother has lived her entire life as a Black woman, although, she has been mistaken often as a White woman. I do know that she often visited a Doctor Hulcher at his office on Main Street in Richmond. I don't think this was a coincidence (they were likely related in some way). I can find no birth record or any other connection with any Hulcher family. Any clues? I believe that her parents either died while she was very young or was abandoned and was adopted by a Black family named Houchins (she had a half brother named Joseph R Houchins, who was a member of President Franklin Roosevelt's "Black Cabinet"). Her mother was likely a light skinned Black woman, which would explain why she lived as a Black woman. Her social security card shows her name as Cora Hulcher Brown. She was enumerated in every census except the 1900 census when she would have been 12 years of age.

My mom's side of the family is Swedish (and still lives in Sweden) and she instilled in me lots of Swedish heritage and traditions which has made me who I am today. My dad's side of the family is German and Irish and the most likely the side of the family I get all my freckles from. Family is so important, and welcome everyone to discover more about them, their history, and share about their loved ones who make up the history of who we are!

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
