I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.

Head of Statue of Liberty - Paris
Head of Statue of Liberty - Paris
This is a photo of the Head of Statue of Liberty on display in a park in Paris added by Ancient Faces on January 11, 2012.

The Statue of Liberty was conceived in 1876 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the American Revolution. She faces East, greeting incoming ships while also looking back toward her birthplace in France. Nearly a quarter-of-a-million onlookers lined Battery Park, while hundreds of boats pulled into the harbor to welcome the Isère when she arrived with the statue.

President Grover Cleveland, a former New York governor, dedicated the statue on Oct. 28, 1886, before tens of thousands of spectators.

Early photo of Agnes Moorehead
Early photo of Agnes Moorehead
This is the earliest photo I could find of the talented actress Agnes Moorehead. If you have any details about this photo like when it might have been taken please leave a comment and I'll update the description.

2020 Update: Thanks to some sleuthing by Peter Nosko the photographer seems to be Irving Chidnoff who was a celebrity photographer in New York City that was active between the years 1925-1948.

Given that Agnes was born in 1900, I'd say this photo was likely taken around 1925-1930.

Lilly and Sol Baum
This is a photo of my dad, Sol Baum, age 10, with his older half-sister, Lilly Baum Broza, daughter of his mother (my grandmother) and her first husband. Lilly was born in Austria, I believe, and was left there with HER grandmother for a few years, while her mother (my grandmother, Fannie Apfelbaum), came to New York. There, Fannie met and married my grandfather Abraham (who also had been married before), They had one daughter, named after my great-grandmother, Devora. This little girl, Deborah, died at a young age. My middle name, Diane, is to honor her. (As her name, Deborah, was to honor Devora). My father was born a few years after Deborah died.

Bredhoft or Bruns relatives from Germany? This photo was found in grand aunts possessions, we assume it is a good bye or voyage photo because of the cloth and twig in hands. Does anyone recognize outfits?

Phineas Gage
Phineas Gage
A photo of Phineas Gage in 1850, holding the tamping iron that caused his brain injury. He was a construction foreman (in charge of blasting) on the railroad, age 27, when an accidental early explosion occurred. The explosion drove a tamping iron (large iron rod, 1.25 inches in diameter) into his head. A large part of his left frontal lobe was destroyed.

After the accident, with the bar still in his head, it is reported that he sat up, talked, and walked to a wagon. Sitting in the wagon for the 3/4 mile ride into town, he was seen by a doctor. The doctor said:

"When I drove up he said, "Doctor, here is business enough for you." I first noticed the wound upon the head before I alighted from my carriage, the pulsations of the brain being very distinct. The top of the head appeared somewhat like an inverted funnel, as if some wedge-shaped body had passed from below upward. Mr. Gage, during the time I was examining this wound, was relating the manner in which he was injured to the bystanders. I did not believe Mr. Gage's statement at that time, but thought he was deceived. Mr. Gage persisted in saying that the bar went through his head. Mr. G. got up and vomited; the effort of vomiting pressed out about half a teacupful of the brain [through the exit hole at the top of the skull], which fell upon the floor."

The doctor removed some coagulated blood, some of the protruding brain, and some skull (bone) fragments, then bandaged his head and cheek.

Gage survived but his personality and temperament were changed. Later in his life, some social skills and personal skills returned and he worked as a stagecoach driver in Chile and later as a farmworker in Santa Clara County, California.

He died of an epileptic seizure (which was being treated by bleeding) in San Francisco, CA on May 21, 1860 at age 37.

I’ve “rescued” two old photographs belonging to the FINLEY Family of Bradford, MA. The first is a photograph of Effie Maude FINLEY which was taken at the Willoughby Studio in Haverhill, MA. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890’s with Effie likely in her 20’s at the time it was taken. The second photograph is identified as Florence Gertrude FINLY and was taken at the same studio in Haverhill, MA. This photograph also appears to have been taken at the same time in the 1890’s with Florence appearing to be about 10-12 years old at the time it was taken.
