Douglas MacArthur was an American general who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. He commanded the Southwest Pacific in World War II, oversaw the successful Allied occupation of postwar Japan, and led United Nations forces in the Korean War.
MacArthur was a larger-than-life, controversial figure who was talented, outspoken, and egotistical.
He was known as the "American Caesar" and rose to a five-star rank.
MacArthur's parents held opposite viewpoints during the US Civil War, with his father being a Union general and his mother being from a prominent Confederate family.
MacArthur earned more than 100 military decorations both in the US and internationally.
