"Death of the well-known surgeon at his home in this city (Syracuse)
The death of Dr. Charles M Magee at 1:50 this morning, while not unexpected by reason of the sad news of his condition the past two or three days, is still a shock. At his bedside were his brother and sister, Walter W Magee and Mrs. William H Gray (Evangia). Sunday morning there was an operation for appendicitis and Dr Magee rallied from the operation but unforeseen complications set in and death resulted. Dr Magee was unconscious during his last hours.
Charles Marquis Magee was born on the 6th of December 1853 in Groveland, Livingston County. He was a son of Col. John Magee and Mariette Patchin. The family is of Scotch-Irish decent. Dr Magee’s early education was received in the common schools and in the State Normal school at Geneseo NY. At an early age he decided to become physician and with that end in view entered Bellevue Medical college hospital in New York City, from which he was graduated with distinction in the class of 1880. Since then he resided in Syracuse. For several years he steadily maintained and built up a large general practice. In 1893, having determined to make abdominal surgery and diseases of women a specialty, he went to NYC and took special instruction under Dr Florin Krug, the specialist in gynecology, and returning to Syracuse, opened a private sanitarium for women. Since then he had devoted his time entirely to abdominal surgery and during a short career in this direction he has acquired a wide and favorable reputation. Dr Magee’s ability in his specialties is known throughout the profession, not only in Syracuse but also in the State and Country. He was the first in Syracuse to perform total hysterectomy an operation at once difficult and rare and was also the first surgeon in this city to perform intubations, which is now quite frequently practiced. Dr Magee’s specialty in abdominal work led him to have a wide acquaintance with appendicitis, the disease with which he was stricken.
Dr Magee was not married. He was a charter member of the Syracuse Academy of Medicine and was also a member of the Onondaga county medical society, the NY Medical assoc, and Syracuse Lodge, No 501, F. A&M. Dr Magee is survived by three brothers. Walter Warren Magee of this city, John C and Edward M Magee of Genesee Valley, Livingston county and one sister Mrs. William H Gray of the same place. At the time of this death Dr Magee was erecting a sanitarium, for women in Seymour St near the corner of West St.
Dr Magee’s Remains may be viewed at his late residence from 12 to 3 pm tomorrow, The services will be held at the house, 800 south West St. In the afternoon and will be strictly private. Internment will e made at Groveland NY on Saturday.
