Earl Vinson Dorman Jr was born on November 15, 1925 in Blevins, Hempstead, Arkansas, United States to parents Earl Vinson Dorman Sr. (1906-1973) and Ruth Ann Garner (1906-1998). He had a brother Jesse N. Dorman (1927-1991). He grew up in Wallaceburg, Hempstead, Arkansas, USA and he enlisted in the US Army on June 7, 1944, in Camp Joseph T Robinson, Little Rock, Arkansas. He was 19 years old at the time of his enlistment and joined the army during World War II. During his time in the army, he served in the 10th Mountain Division, a unit specialized in mountain and winter warfare. Earl was wounded in the battle in Po Valley, Italy, during his service in the US Army. He received a battle injury that was caused by artillery shell fragments, resulting in penetrating wounds in the posterior thoracic wall and the face. For his bravery and sacrifice, Earl was awarded the Purple Heart, a medal given to members of the United States Armed Forces who are wounded or killed in action. On September 19, 1945 Earl married Dorothy Florence Russell (1927–2001) in Pike, Arkansas, United States. He was 19 years old and she was 18 years old. The couple had three sons including Bobby Dorman (1949-1984). Earl worked for the Post Office, was a member of the Sperry Church of Christ, and enjoyed fishing and camping.
