So many old photos, nobody smiled.
This couple is not quite smiling, but you can see it in their eyes
Photo of Marilynn Marlow Marilynn Marlow

The reason they didnt usually smile is because you had to be a still as possible for a long time/exposure
Photo of Karen Ricke Karen Ricke

I also read that they were trying to imitate a painted portrait where no one was ever smiling.

I also thought it was a post mortum photo.

The baby is blurred in spots...meaning it moved, doubt its post mortem
Photo of Esther Evans Esther Evans

I don't think mom would be carrying her purse for a post mortem picture.....looks like they were on their way out the door, and someone said, " let me get a photo".....and by this time they did have ordinary cameras....but, it's a goofy way to hold the baby so she/he would be the focus.....ha

I thought it was a death photo as well. If you enlarge the picture it looks like the baby was added to the photo.

I laugh every time someone sees an old picture and claims to be able to see the sadness in the eyes. They are also the same people who see a speck of dust in a picture and carry on about that spot being haunted.

That beautiful baby must be sitting on something. If mom and dad were holding her free style you would be seeing her neck more if she were dangling in air. Its a lovely family picture, and mom looks happy dad is trying to look reserved. I hope they had a good day after picture was taken.

We are going on a trip soon and when I stroll the antique shops as I love to do...I will search through any black and white photos and hopefully add to my little collection. The hardest thing to find are the photo booth photos on strips.

As opposed to sticking their deceased baby on a pole?? The baby lived into her 80's as told to you by THE OWNER of the picture. It's sat on a high chair with ma and pa holding its hands..its feet have wiggled causing blurring.. .

Sometimes they did this for family passport photos. I have the one for my mom and the one for my dad when they were really young. In the early 1900's the entire family was on the passport. At least that's what mom and dad said.

People had humility then. No duck faces, no posing, just photos and there was nothing wrong with that. They all look happy even though there are no forced smiles.
