John P. Clancy, Little Fog Horn Clancy
A photo of John Patrick Clancy, son of Frederick Clancy. Frederick Melton "Foghorn" Clancy was a famous rodeo promoter, historian, and author. Since he was born in 1882, and already famous by 1923, this is probably a photo of a young boy impersonating him. So cute!
At the age of 15, Foghorn picked up a job as a town crier for a newspaper in Texas. This is where he got his nickname - he had a booming voice! He and a friend entered a local bronc riding contest - Foghorn was bucked off but his voice had become well enough known that the promoter of the contest offered him a job as an announcer. (Remember - microphones were decades in the future. A booming voice could be heard in a huge arena.)
At the beginning of his career, Foghorn announced not only Wild West Shows (rodeos) but also polo games, boxing matches, and carnivals. By the early 1900's, he had become famous throughout the nation.
As time went on, Clancy branched out into promoting the rodeos he announced - and when the microphone became ubiquitous, he began writing about the early West. One of his books - My Fifty Years in Rodeo: Living with Cowboys, Horses and Danger - is still a source for historians.
Foghorn died in 1957. Thirty four years later - in 1991 - he was posthumously inducted into the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum’s, Rodeo Hall of Fame. No wonder this little boy wanted to be him!

John Knaide
I’ve “rescued” an old photograph of John KNAIDE which was taken at the Bushnell Studio in Seattle, WA on 4 Mar 1915. John is noted as 3 years, 4 months, and 12 days old at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following details regarding John and his family:
John KNAIDE was b. 20 Oct 1911 in Seattle, WA to parents John A. KNAIDE (1878-1922) and Ada KNAIDE (1889-1952). John married Elizabeth E. KNAIDE (1913-2009) and he died in 1981 and is buried in the Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park Cemetery in Seattle, WA.
Census records provide the following details:
1930 census of Seattle, WA:
Ada L. KNAIDE, age 38, a widow, born WI, parents born Germany, an Apartment Manager
John F. KNAIDE, son, age 18, born WA, parents born ME/WI, Texaco Co. Office Worker
+ 1 Houseworker + 1 Caretaker
1940 census of Seattle, WA:
Ada KNAIDE, age 47, a widow, born WI
John F. KNAIDE, son, age 28, born WA, Owns/Manages Tire Store
I am hoping to be able to return the photograph to a family member. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley

Clarence Liv & Alonso Tucker 1897 Ohio
Clarence Liv, nicknamed Grandpa, and Alonso Tucker, nicknamed Teddy, behind the Wright Cycle Company around 1897 in Dayton Ohio.
The Wright Brothers (Wilbur and Orville) are credited with taking this photo, which makes it interesting, but I especially love the boys! I wonder what Clarence did to earn the nickname "Grandpa" - maybe he was one of those boys who was wise for his age. And I love Teddy's eyes!

Clara (Shaw) Whitfield
I've "rescued" three photographs which belong to the SHAW Family of Washington State. The first two are of Clara Helen SHAW WHITFIELD with both taken at the French Studio in Tacoma, WA sometime in the early 1890's with Clara likely about 3 years old at the time. The third photograph is of Clara Helen SHAW, Loren Ransome SHAW, and Henry George SHAW and was taken at the Mitchell Studio in Puyallup, WA. This one was also taken in the 1890's with the three children appearing to be about 2-6 years old at the time. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family:
Clara SHAW was b. 1890 and married Mr. WHITFIELD and d. 1971 and is buried in the Wright Crematory and Columbarium in Seattle, WA. Henry G. SHAW was b. 1891 and d. 1915 and is also buried along with his sister in Seattle, WA. Loren Ransome SHAW Jr. was b. 16 Jul 1888 in Washington and married Agnes Mae BODIN on 9 May 1917 in Snohomish Co. WA and he died on 13 Jul 1935 in Seattle, WA and is buried along with his siblings in Seattle, WA. Loren Ransome SHAW Jr. also appears to have been married to Emily B. LANGILL (b. 1895) but the information is confusing since his death notice lists his wife as Agnes but the last census has his wife as Emily B. – are these the same women?
All the children were born to Loren Ransome SHAW II (b. 1862 in Muskegon, MI to parents Loren R. SHAW I and Helen T. SOULE) and Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” SCLYTHE (b. 1872). Their father Loren Ransome SHAW II had only one full sibling, a sister named Carrie V. SHAW (1862-1926), after his Mother’s death his father remarried and had 3 additional children including, Nellie; Dora Lulu; and Don Jerome SHAW, all born between 1868 and 1886).
