Maybe....And I'm not so sure that's a book in her hand....
Not sure if gloves. I enlarged it quite a bit. Almost looks like some sort of flower or decor item in front of the chair, and the leaf part flows seamlessly into the hand looking like a glove.

Or it could be gloves, lol.

No, she moved her hand and the shot is blurred. You can see the page of the book on the left of the frame. It looks like she had the book open then flipped it shut. The wet plates they used back then had a long exposure and it's almost impossible to keep 3 children still that long.
Photo of Dawn Shipley Hill Dawn Shipley Hill
via Facebook
02/22/2017
Well, this is probably dry plate (gelatin), but same concept. Long exposures, so any significant movement becomes a blur.

Photo of Hans Rosenschwein Hans Rosenschwein

02/22/2017
Her right arm does not look attached to that hand. The angle is wrong. The right hand holding the book is actually attached to the chair upright. Possible that she is missing her right hand or part of arm.
Photo of Dawn Shipley Hill Dawn Shipley Hill
via Facebook
02/23/2017
Her left hand has a motion blur, too. And there's a page on the left side of her hand. But the book is closed with her right hand marking her place. I suspect the hand was repainted by the studio to get rid of the motion blur.
You might notice that her boot is over marked with the studio name, which makes her foot placement appear awkward, but she's simply crossing her ankles.

She is holding a pamphlet or program in her left hand, holding place in that with her right hand and there is some kind of ribbon or the like coming up o her right side.

You may be right about the chair, but it sure doesn't look like it matches the arm on the other side to me. OK, OK, OK--I see now that he is holding a cricket bat, but this is why I thought it might be a toy rifle (holding it from the barrel end, stock resting on the floor). I was just taking a guess. Can you see how I could have wondered that?

Well, at least now I know this page is run from the US... anyone else would know a cricket bat when they saw one ;) One question though - what's the object at the edge of the frame to the right of the boy's barrow? The end of a table leg?

You're right, James - some of us ignorant Americans don't know a cricket bat!! :(
Doesn't matter - it works both ways. I wouldn't know a quarterback from a wide receiver :)

A table cloth I think.
No, below and to the right of the tablecloth there's a curved object with a little black foot. It could be part of the table but I'm not sure.

James Dignan - It's the 'foot' part of a table leg, an ornate curled foot. My grandmother had a big old dining table with these type of legs. On the bottom of the foot is a caster/wheel . This was so the table could easily be moved about the room, since they weighed so heavily, the wheels were a great help!

It looks like he is holding a cap in one hand and a cricket bat in the other. Look closely. It is not the arm of the chair the girl is sitting in. They don't match. I think the cap is called a tam.

Taken in 1899 which possibly means the boys may have joined the ANZAC and fought in the Battle of Gallipoli, maybe dying in Turkey, too, during WWI. Just pure speculation, of course.
