SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP — Floyd E. Holbrook, age 79, of Sheffield Township, died Sunday October 25th, 2009 at Community Regional Medical Center, He was born in Ceredo, West Virginia on August 15, 1930 and had been a resident of Sheffield Township since August of 1955; he had previously resided in Olive Hill, Kentucky. Floyd was a graduate of Olive Hill High School. Upon coming to Lorain County he was employed in the Rolling Department of United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works. He was most recently employed as an inspector for the General Motors Fisher Guide Division in Elyria. He retired from that post in 1988 following a career that spanned 30 years with the auto maker. Mr. Holbrook attended the Christian Life Church in Lorain. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and vegetable gardening. Floyd met his loving wife, Carma (nee Blankenship) over 70 years ago, where as children they would walk to school together. They were married on October 1, 1955 in Olive Hill, Kentucky, and for their 50th anniversary in 2005, renewed their vows at Christian Life Church in Lorain. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Danny and Ron both of Sheffield Township, by granddaughters Taylor and Logan, by his grandson Max, and by his sister Joyce Underwood residing in Lawton, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his father Fred, by his mother Donna (nee Medley), and by sisters Mattie Hall and Marcella Pitts. Visitation will be Tuesday October 27th from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Reverend Wallace Justice, Pastor of the Christian Life Church presiding. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon. The family encourages memorial contributions to the Relay for Life of Lorain, 10501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106. I'm a Christian, and I'm a daughter of Allan B. Holbrook, now in heaven. My married name is Debby Stevens.
My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
