In most old photos of children, to tell the difference, the boys had hair parted on the side and the girls hair parted in the middle......... but was not always true.

Super cute photo. My dad- born in 1912- didn't wear pants of any kind until he was 3. They also didn't cut his hair until he was 3. I think probably it was easier to change diapers if babies wore dresses. Did plastic pants even exist then???

Can't say I agree with the article. I have a picture of my Dad with a dress and long curly hair. People in the west of Ireland were superstutious and feared the fairies would steal male children and leave a 'changeling'. So they dressed and treated the boys as girls to confuse the little people. When the boy was about two they had a little cermony called 'breeching the boy' where the boy's baby curls would be shorn and he would get his first breeches or trousers. Then he was accepted into the community as a boy. When we went to visit my wife's granny, who wore black as a widow and smoked a pipe, when she threw the washing up water out of the door into the garden, there was no plumbing, would always mutter something in Irish. She told us she was warning the little people because you would have bad luck if you soaked them!

Also the practice of dresses was due to the cost of material and it was easier to make dresses for children wether for boys or girls. It was the wealthier families that could afford the trousers as the boys grew. It was also easier for diapering.

Why, thank you for your response, Rose Gasak, but in answer to your question, no, I consider myself to be fairly well informed. You obviously are ignorant to the fact that Jesus (pronounced He'zues with the first e pronounced as a long a, in the Spanish language) is a very common name given to males in the Hispanic community.

The real reason why boys wore dresses is that in those times more girls then boys survived when they were small children...So the parents dressed their boys as girls so the evil sprits thought they were girls...

My best guess is that dresses were easier to sew from scratch; the first home sewing machines were manufactured around 1860, and most likely they did not become a commonplace in most homes right away. Modern indoor plumbing was also not a commonplace in most homes, and it was probably easier to get a non-toilet-trained baby in and out of dresses, rather than pants.

Boys were put into pants when they were potty trained, or breached. The article is really incorrect and narrowly researched.
I am so glad everyone has enjoyed the picture of my husband's great uncles and aunt. They were born in 1907 in Nebraska and all died in the 1990's. They lived together for their entire lives (except when Mary had to go into a nursing home at an advanced age) and none of them married.
