Gary was the youngest of six children born to Edson Lavell and Ida May Palmer. He was born in Salt Lake but grew up in Blanding, Utah, attending San Juan High School where he graduated in 1965. He was an athlete who played football and during his senior year was selected to the first team, all-state football as a center lineman.
After graduation, Gary was then called and served a successful mission in Florida for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Upon his return, he met and then married his first wife Karen. Together they had one daughter. They later divorced and he then married Janene who had two children that Gary adopted as his own and they then had another son together.
Gary served the city of South Salt Lake as a police officer for 21 years, retiring and then working for Conway trucking until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his 4th wife, Liane; oldest daughter, Nichole; and older brother, Allen.
