Mark Johnson

Royal Oak - On February 12, 2022, the world lost an incredible force of a man. Mark Andrew Johnson, born on December 20, 1958 in Baltimore Maryland to Neal Johnson and Margaret (Reott) Johnson, passed away at the University of Michigan hospital after fiercely battling a rare blood condition for several years that resulted in lymphoma. Mark spent nearly four decades cultivating and driving innovation within reimbursement teams both at Beaumont Health System where he served as Senior Vice President of Business Development and Revenue Management and at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, serving as Vice President of Provider Contracting. Mark loved the work, loved building relationships, loved trying what hadn't been done before and watching it succeed. He always credited others for his successes. He hated titles, only seeing their value as tools to drive improvement for the betterment of people. Outside of his work, Mark enjoyed golf, cigars and a bourbon with his childhood best friends. Aside from his love of travel discovered later in life, he loved northern Michigan, especially Torch Lake. He loved driving his old suburban up north after work, insisting on the windows down regardless of the outside temperature. Mark never met a stranger. His kindness and love of a good conversation knew no limit. From regularly sitting on the front porch with all the neighbors to asking the Uber drivers to share their stories, Mark loved knowing people. Mark was direct, but kind and always put others' needs above his own. When he laughed, you could hear it down the hall and it always filled you with joy and warmth. There is a hole in our hearts that only Mark can fill, but he was insistent that we find happiness after our grief. For those of us surviving him, it will be a grueling task. Mark is survived by his loving wife and thought partner, Amanda, his beautiful children Meghan Johnson and Andrew Johnson, his mother Margaret Johnson, his sister Gay White, his brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Kelli Johnson, his brother and sister-in-law Tim and Rhonda Johnson and his brother Jeff Johnson along with many close-knit childhood friends that should also be considered his brothers, especially Paul Grout, Jim Dietz and Paul Koueiter. Visitation and funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 12, at St. Clare of Montefalco in Grosse Pointe beginning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in honor of Mark.

Debby Stevens
I'm a Christian, and I'm a daughter of Allan B. Holbrook, now in heaven. My married name is Debby Stevens.
My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
