Helen Watters Bergman (1913 - 1999) was a member of a Central California pioneer family. Her grandfather and father were both physicians who founded Watsonville Community Hospital. She was born in Watsonville, lived in Watsonville, and died in Watsonville. And if you know Watsonville, it's more of a village than a town - even today.

The one foray for Helen away from Watsonville was to Stanford University. Going back to - you guessed it, Watsonville - after college, she married a few years later and she and husband Helmer owned a Mobil gas station where they worked together

We remember this West Coast small town girl.

Sad - she was beautiful - but in a way, I'm glad she did not live to see what is happening to California now, all the fires and other troubles. She was "Greatest Generation" and would have been deeply saddened.

In the 1930 census, Helen was living with her parents in Watsonville and attending school. The census says her mother was born in CA and her father was born in Iowa. Also in the household were brothers Richard and Peter and maid, Florence Yorman. Her father was an MD in private practice. According to the 1940 census, Helen M Watters was 26 and single, living with her parents Henry Gustav Watters (1884-1964), 55, and Bertha C (Brassel) Watters (1885-1970), 54. Also in the household were Peter KempWatters (1918 - 1978) , her brother, and Raymond C Camcam, 30, servant. Helen was working as a stenographer and had graduated college. Peter was a "Coca Cola dispenser" and father Henry was still an MD in private practice. According to her September 7 1999 obituary in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Santa Cruz CA, Helen was a native of Watsonville CA. It goes on to say that "She was a member of the pioneer Watters family and graduated in 1936 from Stanford University where she played on the women's basketball team. She and her husband operated a Mobil Gas Station in Watsonville in the 1950s. In the 1950 federal census, Helen said she was the bookkeeper for the station and husband Helmer said he was the station operator. She later worked in the office at Smuckers in Watsonville for many years. Her grandfather, Dr. PK Watters, and her father, Dr. HG Watters, both founded Watsonville Community Hospital. Helen married Helmer Yngve Bergman (1907-1975) in November 1947 in Reno NV. Helmer preceded her in death. They had no children: she was survived by 3 nieces and a nephew.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
