Hugh Hefner, 1969
A photo of Hugh Hefner with Playboy Bunnies at his Chicago Playboy club in 1969.

Born in 1926 Chicago, both of his parents were teachers and he grew up in (his words) a "conservative, Midwestern, . . . and Methodist" family.

He began as a copywriter at Esquire but after being denied a raise ($5), he mortgaged his home, raised money from 45 investors - including his mother - and with the money (under $10,000) launched Playboy magazine in 1953. A nude photo of Marilyn Monroe from a 1949 calendar was in the magazine and the first issue sold over 50,000 copies.

The Playboy empire took off after the success of the magazine and Hugh Hefner became a household name. He stood up for gay rights, civil rights, animal rights, and the acceptance of everyone.

Married 3 times, Hugh had several long-term partners and 4 children. He died at the Playboy Mansion at the age of 91 and will be buried next to Marilyn Monroe in Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery - a plot that he bought when it came up for sale in 1992.
Date & Place: in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois United States

Today we remember Hugh Hefner for the changes he single-handedly had in changing the culture of generations since the 1950's. Dying in the Playboy mansion at age 91, he died as he lived. RIP Mr. Hefner.

We don't need to remember a man whose only accomplishment in life
was to think about sex during every waking moment.

As well as the degradation and objectification of women. Not to mention the proliferation of pornography that no doubt destroyed many marriages and harmed countless lives. May God have mercy on his soul.

Well I don't know about all that, but he could have put his efforts into some more useful.

Good riddance to bad rubbish .. He exploited women all his life, made sex a dirty word, filled his pockets with money from the use of his "bunny's activities". He ran w**** houses not clubs and a mansion. That mansion should self implode from all the filth and degradation that happened in it for his lifetime.

He actually was a huge supporter of women's rights back in the 60s and 70s. His magazine was not pornongraphy by today's standards, but was instrumental in the sexual revolution. There are far worse monsters today exploiting women today with hard core porn and drugs. Hefner actually encourage his "playmates &bunnies" to pursue college degrees and their own business's, much more than Larry Flint who was a real creep. Also remember these women wanted to be in Playboy Magazine, they competed to get published because of the money and fame.

And how many of them came away with degrees in space Aronautics ? You see where I'm going with this, right? 😂 Like the strippers I've met that tell me how liberating it is and how much money they make, after the club owners charge them $200.00 a night to "use the stage". Probably just put your face back into that book Jud. No , wait, did I say book ? I meant bottle of Chardonnay. 😉

Meh..... Nah. Trump's already sent us back into the 50s , I'm good. Unless you're a man, the sexual revolution didn't work out so great for % 50 of us. Now I really do have to be the Perfect mother, the loving wife, the sex kitten in the bedroom, the maid, laundress, cook, driver, work outside the home and literally bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan. A real liberation would have 🐝 been my man coming home from work and doing anything, anything at all. And give me sex only when I want it. Where the F's that ground breaking , world changing revolutionary ? Damn, you women be brain- washed with your RIP. I ought to put my Nike up your dumb a****.
RIP ? Hell no, see ya perv. Bet your junk was small as your intellect, too 😂 Oh, I hope against hope that God is a Woman !

MARK 8:36 "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? " He exploited Marilyn Monroe and promoted filth degrading women who allowed him to for fame and fortune.Monroe posed nude for Tom Kelley a photographer in exchange for fifty dollars who sold her photos to Western Lithograph Company which made calenders. Hefner bought her photos from Kelley 4 years later when her career took off, for 500 dollars. She never signed with Hefner and he made her his first centerfold or Sweetheart of the Month. Apparently she didn't mind and became close with Hefner. They are buried next to each other in Westwood Village Memorial Park In Los Angeles California. It doesn't matter that he encouraged women to get educated and start businesses of their own. Many of those women had male family members who saw them in his magazines. Imagine dads and brothers seeing a daughter or sister nude in a porn magazine. These days it is not shocking but back then society had morals and he slowly and meticulously destroyed that. He has met his maker.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
