John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892 - 1973) wrote books and poetry, and was a distinguished Professor at Oxford University. Best known for "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings", his son Christopher posthumously gathered his old notes and manuscripts to create "The Silmarillion", which had 5 parts. A friend of C. S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien is credited with being the father of "high fantasy".

Born in South Africa where his father was a bank manager, Tolkien moved to England with his mother when he was 3. He was home schooled by her until she died when he was 12. His father had died earlier, leaving him and his younger brother orphans. After that, the boys were raised by a Catholic priest and were sent to King Edward's School and later, Oxford. He went on to marry and have four children.

The Hobbit was published in 1937, The Lord of the Rings was published during the years of 1954 - 1955, and The Silmarillion was published in 1977. We will always remember the life of the orphan boy with his dazzling imagination.

A good education, based upon good literature, is priceless, but this nation no longer believes that!

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, best known as J.R.R. Tolkien, was a writer, poet, and academic likely best remembered by most for his high fantasy works The Hobbit (published in 1937) and The Lord of the Rings (published in 1954). John Tolkien's parents were Arthur Reuel Tolkien (1857 -1896) and Mabel Suffield (1870 - 1904). He had one brother, Hilary Arthur Reuel Tolkien, born 1894 in South Africa. John Tolkien married Edith Mary Bratt (1889 - 1971) on March 22, 1916, in Warwick, Warwickshire, England, in St. Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church. They had three sons: John Francis (1917 - 2003), Michael Hilary (1920 - 1984), and Christopher (born 1924) and one daughter, Priscilla (1929 - 2022). J.R.R. Tolkien (1892 - 1973) wrote books and poetry, as well as being a distinguished Professor at Oxford University. Best known for "The Hobbit" published in 1937, and "The Lord of the Rings" published during the years of 1954 - 1955, his son Christopher posthumously gathered his old notes and manuscripts to create "The Silmarillion", which had 5 parts. I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.

I'm the creator of AncientFaces which we began in 2000 while I was a sophomore at Santa Clara University. To our amazing friends and super active members - thank you for your support & patience as we've slowly but surely evolved AncientFaces into the place where our loved ones live on through our memories. This particular account is for my personal interests. Feel free to reach out and say hi!
One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) relatives was one of the first to be hanged for criminal punishment in the U.S.
