Jaroslav Luchkan was born on August 11, 1936 in Ukraine. He immigrated to the United States and became a naturalized citizen on March 11, 1955.
He attended The University of Connecticut (UCONN) in Mansfield, CT and later worked as an Aeronautical Engineer on the Apollo rocket for United Technologies, NASA. Jaroslav is recognized for his contributions in discovering a flaw in the Apollo rocket's design.

He was also part of the Chornomortsy fraternal organization and served in the US Army. He enlisted on October 1, 1958 and was discharged on August 26, 1960.
