Joseph emigrated to America with his family in 1846. They settled in Chicago, where some of his uncles were already established. When the Civil War broke out, Joseph lied about his age and, at 17, joined the 82nd Illinois Infantry, which was made up of German-Americans from the Chicago area. Joseph was wounded and captured in 1863 at Chancellorsville, was exchanged, and spent several months in a hospital, rejoining his regiment after Gettysburg, and in time to participate in the Chattanooga campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea. According to some accounts, he never fully recovered from his war wounds. After the war, he returned to Chicago and Married Julia Anselm. They were still in Chicago at the time of the great fire. Around 1880, Joseph and Julia joined the German American Colonization Society of Garden City, and moved their family to what is now Cullman County, Alabama. Joseph was listed as a farmer and a Justice of the Peace for Garden City, Alabama. He donated land for St. Boniface Catholic Church and Cemetery, which still serve the local Catholic community. Joseph died in what is now Hanceville, Alabama, and is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, along with his wife, and several of his children and grandchildren. The land he settled is still owned and by his descendants.
