Joseph Hiram Johnson,VA Lottery Ticket,1842: This is a lottery ticket from the year 1842 found in the personal ledger book belonging to my great-great-grandfather,Joseph Hiram Johnson (1825 - 1879) of Richmond, Virginia. The ticket was sold for the benefit of Monongalia Academy in the western part of the state. According to the Monongalia History web site

the Academy was founded in 1814 in Morgantown. That part of the state is now West Virginia and the school eventually became West Virginia University .
