When his father died, Joseph was only seven years old. His mother was unable to take care of him so his grandfather, John Holbrook, rode horseback to New York from Massachusetts, a distance of 250 miles, and took the boy on the horse back to his home in New England. Joseph went to school and received a fair education for the times. When he became of age, his grandfather gave him a note for $100 and, shortly after, Joseph started west to seek his way in life. In 1832 he heard of the Mormons and, after reading the Book of Mormon, he was baptized in January 1833. From then on his life was deeply involved with the Church. He went on foot to Kirtland to meet the Prophet and from then on suffered the persecutions as well as the joys of his new-found religion. He buried his first wife in Nauvoo and brought his children to the Valley. He settled in the Bountiful area where he was appointed Probate Judge. He organized school districts, took care of court and civil business, and was active in the church. He contributed liberally for the erection of the Bountiful Tabernacle. He helped frame the state constitution.
