Lanson enlisted at the age of 18 in 1862 with the Union Army, 26th Michigan Infantry Company E. He serve under Longstreet and attained the rank of Corporal. On 6/17/1864 during the battle of Petersberg, VA. Lanson was shot in the skull and left for dead on a pile of dead bodies. He spent a year in the hospital in Annapolis, Maryland. He was discharged in Washinton in June 28th, 1865. The bullet (mini ball)couldn't be removed. He went home paralized. He died in 1889 at the age of 45. This is the last photo taken of him.
