At least she was able to sit down and make her call. Many of the early phones required standing to use.

Ha ha! They didn't yet know how to put the speaker and receiver together and this design left no room for the bell, either. It was quite popular for awhile, as evidenced in the old movies of the time. I like to imagine what the people then would have thought if a time traveler had shown up with a SMARTPHONE.

We had a phone like that when we lived in rural SW Wisconsin. I mean, that was our phone and was the phone I used to make my first calls growing up. Our number was "four shorts."

We have my paternal great grandparent's hall table that was used to hold their candlestick telephone like this one. They lived in New Martinsville, Wetzel Co., WV. Their names were Morrell Brown Potts and Mary Elizabeth Hutchison Potts. He had a hardware store and roofing company and died in early 1929. She was a homemaker and died in 1940.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. For information on the folks who build and support the community see Daniel - Founder & Creator.
My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
