Dressler was a superstar in her 60s, not an easy fete in a business that glorified youth and glamour. The highest-paid MGM star making $5,000 a week, Marie Dressler was not a conventional beauty in the movie star sense, but she had universal appeal. And how! Audiences couldn’t get enough of her quick-witted down-to-earth persona and expressed their appreciation by buying movie tickets at a rapid rate.
