Mary and Gertie KROUT
I have in my possession two photographs belonging to the KROUT Family of Pennsylvania. The first is a photograph of Mary and Gertie KROUT taken at the W. C. Bell Studio which was operating in York, PA. The photograph appears to have taken in the 1890's or early 1900's with the two women likely in their 20's at the time it was taken. The second photograph is identified as Miss Ruth Ellen KROUT and appears to have been taken in the 1890's with little Ruth likely about 5 years old at the time it was taken.

Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding this family:

Ruth Ellen KROUT was b. 19 Feb 1897 in Paradise Township, York Co., PA to parents Michael Gunnet KROUT (1859-1932) and Catharine or Catherine or Katherine Ann GENTZLER (1857 or 1861-1943) who were married 26 Dec 1876 in York Co., PA. Ruth was one of 7 children born to this couple including John Frederick; Curtis or Euetis Henry; Mary “Mollie” or “Molly” Bertha; Gertrude May; Charles Grant; Ruth Ellen; and Leah Lollie KROUT, all born between 1878 and 1899. Ruth died 6 Aug 1923 in West York, PA from complications of diabetes and she is buried in Manchester Township, York Co., PA.

When Ruth died in 1923 her obituary noted that most of her family including her parents and some of her siblings were living in York Haven, PA. Her brother Curtis KROUT was living in Davis, WV; and a sister Mrs. CLOSSMAN was in Zanesville, OH.

Gertrude “Gertie” May KROUT was b. 5 Jul 1885 in York Co., PA to the same parents. Gertie married Maurice Jacob YINGER (1885-1954) on 24 Jun 1906 in Goldsboro, PA and they had a son, Leo Kay YINGER (1911-1983). Gertie died 9 Oct 1936 in York Haven, PA and she is buried in the Manchester Union Cemetery in Manchester, PA.

Mary “Molly” or “Mollie” Bertha KROUT was b. 6 Oct 1881 in York Haven, PA to the same parents and she married Herman or William Grant CLOSSMAN (1868-1944) on 19 Apr 1905 in Rochester, NY. The couple had 6 children, five daughters and one son including Mary Catherine or Kathryn; Helen May; Ida Elizabeth; Harry Grant; Reba Fern; and Ruth Ellen CLOSSMAN, all born between 1905 and 1919. Molly died 18 Mar 1942 in Wayne Township, Muskingum Co., OH and is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Zanesville, OH.

I am hoping to get the photographs to family and would appreciate you contacting me if you are a member of this KROUT Family or know someone who might be.

Thanks,
Shelley
