How would you like to deal with that hair every day without modern conveniences? The beautiful Mary Anne (Maime) Mellinger taken sometime around the 1880s.
~ I find that long hair is really easy to take care of. Eileen Wheeler is right. As time as passed and my hair is not as full as it was in my younger years when long and flowing, I find a good old fashioned Gibson Girl updo works for every occasion. Takes minutes to do and looks good. Back then, just getting clean water and shampoo of any kind might have been the problem though. ;)
l have fine, thin hair, not quite to my waist. A Gibson is how l "set my hair", and l can go anywhere in it! At work, l mostly just pull it back with a flexible band.
Lol, my hair is very long, it ends right below my hips I love it! Most of my life have had long, long hair. I wear it braided at bed time, during the day it is one long high pony tail or french braided, so many hair styles :)
I had very long hair for over years until last summer when I got a very short cut. Much easier short, but not that hard long, just wash before bed, dry in the ,morning, I just got tired of always wearing it braided to keep it out of the way. Wearing heavy clothing and dresses like they did back then would be the big problem.
i was thinkin about having long hair in the 60s before blow dryers, hot curlers, curling irons, all that...it was SO hard but we didn't know any better, so we didn't complain.
Usually a style like her's was done by braiding it while it was damp and she slept in it....my Grandmother did her hair that way. Each time she would cut her hair she would have a braid over 4 foot long. The family still has them.
It would be really nice if you cold get a picture of Gen. Vallejo's daughters showing there long hair. Even today I can't wrap my head around them combing it every day
It was likely put up or braided the rest of the time, then taken down for the picture. It may have only been taken down every three days or so to wash and brush out, so she likely was not dealing with it each day. Great picture!
my grandmother's hair was this long and was causing her neck problems and bald spots...the family literally had to force her to get it cut (on doctors orders). She did not want to cut it but the family prevailed and she had no further problems
My gt grand mother had very long hair down to the floor she wore it up all the time only time it was down was when she washed it maybe this lady did too
Now check out this lady's head of hair, and they didn't have the tools to keep it trained like they do today...I wouldn't want the challenge if I was a lady....
In the old days, women only washed their hair every 2 weeks, at most. Think of it - pump the water, carry it inside, heat it on the woodstove, get out a tub, and just to wash your hair! My Mother only made me wash mine every 2 weeks for that very reason - it was really labor intensive.
I'm working on that length now. I have along way to go but , it will be worth it. My hair goes almost to my waist . I only cut a half inch off every couple months . It's all one length except my bains. My hair grows fast. But so far its been pretty easy to take care of. I wash every other day and let it air dry. Having fine hair helps it to dry really fast. And everyone loves to play with it. I love my long hair. Its really not that much trouble .
Oh her was beautiful. If i were liveing back then with hair that long i would just have dealt with it. Real women as of today deal with things in a good way.
Not hard at all, other than cutting it. You see the waves!? She either braided it for the night time hours, or rolled it in a bun and put it in a crocheted piece to contain it it. Don't worry she had a system.
Hair has been called a woman's "crowning glory" - it's certainly been a mode of expression over the centuries.
In the 1800's, brushing your hair 100 times a day was a popular way to beautify it - but hair was usually washed only once a month. And shampoo wasn't invented until the end of the 1800's. For women, ...
