Maynard J. Holbrook, 87, residing in Sandusky, passed away Tuesday morning, October 10, 2017 at The Commons of Providence after a lengthy illness.

Maynard was born on March 13, 1930 in Coeburn, VA to the late Robert and Vicey (Burton) Holbrook.

Maynard retired from New Departure Hyatt General Motors in 1990 after 37 1/2 years of service. He was a member of The Church of God, where he served as the pastor. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing music, gospel singing, preaching, his church, and he enjoyed drawing art for local churches and charity events and spending time with his family and friends.

Maynard is survived by his daughter, Joy Abbott of Vickery, OH; sons, Tim (Jane) Holbrook of Elyria, Curtis (Sheila) Holbrook of Castalia and Ken (Cheryl) Holbrook of Huron; grandchildren, Eric (Kim), Susan, Adam, Shane, Dustin (Rachel), Dale, Sam and Derek; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma Franklin and Betty Brandon and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Maynard is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis A. (Kiser) Holbrook in 2015; sister, Wilma Babb and brothers, Noah, Robert, Fred, Leslie, Curtis Holbrook and a brother in infancy.

Friends may call on Friday, October 13, 2017 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday at 10:30 am. Bishop Herbert Cannon will officiate. Entombment will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.

I'm a Christian, and I'm a daughter of Allan B. Holbrook, now in heaven. My married name is Debby Stevens.
My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
