Beauty and brains! This 100 year old photo is of Natacha Rambova, 1897-1966. She started as a dancer, became a sometime actor and set/costume designer, then a published authority on Egyptology. And along the way she married Rudolph Valentino! (For 2 years) Those '20s women - they were real pathfinders!

Natacha Rambova
Born in Salt Lake City, Natacha's family were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church). She was raised in San Francisco and educated in London and began a career in show business as a dancer. At age 19, she moved to Los Angeles and became a costume designer for the movies. She also met Rudolph Valentino there - they were married from 1923 - 1925. After their divorce, she married an European aristocrat - Alvaro de Urzaiz in 1932 - their marriage was annulled in 1957. It was during this marriage that she visited Egypt and became fascinated by its culture and history. This became a life-long passion and she was a published author on the subject in the 1950s. From dancer to costume designer to set designer to published author - Natacha (born Winifred) seems to have lived a life of freedom. She died in Southern California - seemingly traveling the world and ending up once again on the West coast of the US

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
