Nicholas Joseph Mastrovich is the son of Nick and Mary Mastrovich. He was born on August 19, 1917 in Lead, Lawrence County South Dakota, United States and had older siblings Vinnie, Johnnie, and Steve Mastrovich. He was a 1937 high school graduate of Lead High School (Lead, South Dakota, USA). In school he was involved in Football (1, 2, 3, 4),Basketball (1), Track (1, 3, 4), "L" Club (2, 3, 4), Nugget Staff (4), Boiler Room Knights (3), and Class Officer (1, 2, 3). Nicholas resided in Lawrence, South Dakota, and was registered for the draft on October 16, 1940. At the time, he was 23 years old and working as a student at the University of Nevada. He later enlisted on June 15, 1943, at Ft. Douglas in Utah. He was enlisted as a private selectee with no branch assignment. His terms of enlistment were for the duration of the war or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law.
