Police seek '77 killing link to slain youths
Chicago and Homewood police are investigating a possible link between the three youths whose bodies were found stabed (sp) to death Sunday and a Homewood youth whose fatal stabbing two years ago was never solved.

One of the youths found slain Sunday was to have testified in the forthcoming trial of John D. Norman, who police have said is the leader of a nationwide child pornography ring.

In the earlier killing, Kenneth Hellstrom, 17, of 18511 Lexington Av., Homewood, had started home on Jan. 20, 1977, from his job at a gas station several blocks away when he was attacked and stabbed six times in the back. He made his way home and collapsed. He died several hours later.

The Homewood youth had implicated Norman on child molesting charges in 1973. Norman pleaded guilt and was sent to prison for four years.

In the Sunday stabbings, three youths were found dead in a car parked in an alley at 1460 W. Pensacola Av. about 3 a.m. Each of the youths had been slashed many times and their throats cut in what police described as an "almost ritualistic" stabbing.

The victims were identified as Michael Salcido, 17, a ward of the state who lived at Maryville Academy in Des Plaines; his brother, Arthur, 19, a former state ward who lives in Princeton; and Frank Mussa, 16, the son of a Princeton grocer.

Michael was the youth scheduled to testify at Norman's upcoming trial. Witnesses told police that 30 minutes before the bodies were found, they had seen six males and a female in and around the car.

Norman was arrested last June in his apartment at 68511/2 Wrightwood Av. after two boys told police he had photographed them naked and performed a sex act with them. Norman, on parole at the time for the child-molesting conviction, was charged with contributing to the sexual delinquency of minors.

Although Norman was in prison the night Hellstrom was killed, police want to question his allged accomplice in the child prostitution ring, Phillip R. Paske, who was once tried for murder but later pleaded not guilt to theft after plea-bargaining with prosecutors.

Informants have told police that Paske often dresses as a woman. Investigators are divided about whether the three victims were killed in the car, as suggested by the positions of their bodies when found, or whether they had been killed elsewhere, as suggested by the relatively small amount of blood in the car.

Phillip R Paske
Philip Ronald Paske is notoriously remembered for a series of evil acts. These include potentially being involved with the kidnapping of Johnny Gosch (the first child to appear as "missing: on a milk carton), an accomplice to serial killer John Wayne Gayce, and his roles working with John D. Norman. identified by police in Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas as the mastermind of the Delta Project, a Chicago-based prostitution ring that sent young boy across the nation, and with various thefts and murders in Illinois. He was also involved with John's child pornography ring - assisting with distribution of his underage newsletter. Those who knew Philip described him as being tall, blonde, and often dressed as a woman. By the age of 25, Phillip was a convicted murderer and thief who, police said, was on probation and carrying on John D. Norman's pornography ring in Norman's absence. (Norman was serving a four-year sentence at the time in the Illinois state prison at Pontiac.) It is believed that high profile politicians were subscribers to John & Philip's newsletter. The New York Times reported that during a raid in 1973 that "the detectives raided the second‐floor apartment at 3716 Cole Avenue and seized files, pornographic literature, a camera, photo‐engraving equipment, stationery, an electric typewriter and hundreds of booklets with names and addresses. The confiscated material filled a pickup truck." See the full article at Chicago Tribune August 16th 1977. When a request was made for a stack of approx 50,000-100,000 index cards that contained the names of the newsletter subscribers, the State Department of Texas said that there were no records that matched this request. Interesting aside: there exists a recording of serial killer John Wayne Gacy where he describes being upset for taking the responsibility for a series of crimes which involved four other people - including Philip and John D. Norman. Paperwork exists that shows that Philip worked for John Wayne Gacy's construction company on three different occasions. To see more about the link between Gacy, Phillip, and Norman, see the March, 2022 article: How 'pedophile's pedophile' linked two serial killers. Paske died at the age of 45 but there is no report of how he died.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
