Richard Darwin Groninger was born on March 23, 1928 in Pleasant, Wabash, Indiana, USA to parents Henry Glen Groninger (1908-2000) and Geneva Lucille Burch (1908-2010). He had one sister, Gloria V Groninger Kays (1933-1999). He lived in Plainfield, Indiana, USA and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1946. Richard registered for the draft at 18 years old on March 23, 1946, in Indiana, USA. A few months later he enlisted on June 3, 1946, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Richard enlisted in the Regular Army, which includes officers, nurses, warrant officers, and enlisted men. He entered into an enlistment contract for the Panama Canal Department, which was a military department responsible for defending the Panama Canal Zone. He was married to Jayne Ellen Davis (1928-2011) and the couple had three sons together.
