Rufino Justeniane
Born in the Philippines, Rufino was a veteran of World War I. According to his World War II draft registration card, dated about 1942, Rufino was age 48, living in Phoenix, Arizona, was 5 feet 2 inches tall, had brown eyes and black hair, and had a dark brown complexion. He weighed 125 pounds and was Filipino. He had 3 tattoos: upper left arm - sailor USN War 1917 - 1918; lower left arm - woman, Venus; and right upper arm - a cross. He was married to Josephine Justeniane and was employed by Maricopa County at the County Hospital. In the 1950 federal census, Rufino was 56 and living in Phoenix Arizona with his children Rosie (17), Josephine (14), and Tony (10). He said that he was married but there was no wife in the household. He was unable to work. When Rufino passed in 1973, he was survived by his wife, Josephine, and his three children. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US.
