Samuel Lafe Smith, age 83, of Grand Blanc, Michigan, died peacefully at home Monday morning, August 29, 2022 surrounded by his family. Born June 7, 1939, in Millersville, Missouri, he was the son of the late Sherman A. Smith and Euga E. Smith (Wallis).

Sam was a long time UAW member working at Chevy Metal Fabrication in Flint, Michigan. He enjoyed spending time at his family cabin, boating, watching the Detroit Red Wings, collecting steins, gardening, and euchre. Sam is survived by his loving wife of 5 years, Joanne N. Smith (Greenway); along with children Matthew Smith (Sonya Smith) of Fenton, Michigan, Theodore J. Smith (Kerry Lenaghan) of Williamsburg, Michigan, and Lee Anne (John Vander Hoff) of Hillsdale, Michigan; step-children Lorli Woitas (Thom Woitas) of Vancouver, Washington, Linda Hayes (John Hayes) of Reed City, Michigan, Teri Rivard (Scott Rivard), Sara Kiefer (Joe Kiefer), and Jill Hetherton; grandchildren, Lindsay Jimenez (Jack Jimenez), Jocelyn Smith-Lucas (James Lucas), Emily Reed (Chris Reed), Maggie Smith, Zachary Smith (Alesha Smith), Peter Vander Hoff, Derek Vander Hoff, and Mia Vander Hoff; step-grandchildren Celeste Moore, Jessie Hayes, Heather Schroeder (Steve Schroeder), Emily Kokko, Cody (Cori) Kischnick, Hunter Kischnick, River (Mallory) Kischnick, Seth Rivard, Skylar Wolf, Tanner Wolf, Blake Gooch, Grant Gooch, Olivia Gooch, and Kinzlee McCarrick; great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father Euga E. Smith (Wallis) and Sherman A. Smith, wife Joanne Smith (Partenio), granddaughter Madison Vander Hoff, and wife Marguerite A.L. Smith (Whitten).

A Mass and Christian burial for Sam Smith will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Friday, September 2, 2022 at Holy Family Catholic Church on 11804 S Saginaw St, Grand Blanc, Michigan 48439 with visitation beginning at 9:00AM. Burial will follow at Crestwood Cemetery on 2020 E Hill Rd, Grand Blanc, Michigan 48439. Friends may visit with the family Thursday, September 1, 2022 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Hill Funeral Home on 11723 S Saginaw St, Grand Blanc, Michigan 48439. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

I'm a Christian, and I'm a daughter of Allan B. Holbrook, now in heaven. My married name is Debby Stevens.
My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
