You set your damp hair on long 1 to 2 inch wide strips of cloth by winding the hair in a spiral twist around the material, starting from near the top of a strip you hold in place against the scalp. Wind the hair smoothly around the cloth to about half the length of a strip, down to about the middle of the material. . Holding the place you stopped, wind material back up the hair keeping the strip tight against the spirals. When you get near the place where you started, bring the loose ends of the cloth together and tie them in a knot. Continue wrapping and tying hair into long spirals around the cloth strips. You can sleep on the cloth strips. In the morning you can untie each knot and unwrap the outside strip then simply pull the remaining strip out of the curl without disturbing the hair. My mom showed me how it was done when she was growing up and I wore my "Scarlet O'Hara" curls to school that day.
