Logistics Specialist 2nd Class (Surface Warfare) Scotty V. E. Holbrook, 40, a native of Sulligent, Ala., passed away Nov. 19 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is son of Ely and Evon Holbrook, and stepson of Myrtle Holbrook of Sulligent.
Petty Officer Holbrook is survived by his wife Rosie, daughter Sarah and son Scotty J.; brother Robert Holbrook and his wife Carleene of Greenwood Springs, Miss.; brother Elis Ely Holbrook of Harrison, Mich.; sister Kathy Brower and her husband Mike of Sulligent; sister Ginger Moore of Ypsilanti, Mich., father-in-law William Smith of Sulligent; and step brothers Kevin Carter of Birmingham, Ala., and Joseph Carter of Sulligent.

Following high school, Scotty Holbrook worked a number of jobs in the Sulligent area. He was introduced to his future wife Rosie in 1996 by his father who happened to be visiting with Rosie's grandfather at the time. That chance meeting turned into a relationship that would stand the test of time for Scotty and Rosie.

Their first child, Sarah, was born in 1996, and their son Scotty J. came along in 1999. Now, with a family in tow, it was time for Scotty to establish a more solidified career field.

Scotty enlisted in the United States Navy in December 2005 through the delayed entry program. He attended recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill, in July 2006. Upon graduation, Holbrook attended Aviation Storekeeper (AK) "A School" at Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) at NAS Pensacola, Fla., and AK "C School" at NATTC NAS Meridian, Miss.

In December 2007, Petty Officer Holbrook reported to his first command, USS Halyburton (FFG-40), homported at Naval Station, Mayport, Fla. The Holbrook family soon settled in to the Mayport area and life in the Navy. It was a perfect match.

From the day he first reported aboard USS Halyburton, Scotty was viewed as a model Sailor. His performance and technical knowledge was respected by his superiors and his peers, and his cheerful approach to duty and his fellow shipmates set the tone of "pride in service" throughout the ship.

Over the next three years, LS2 Holbrook would receive four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals for superior performance, each citation reflecting his "superb aviation supply management." In 2011, he was selected as Halyburton's Jr. Sailor of the Year.

In January 2012, Petty Officer Holbrook received orders to Naval Air Station Kingsville. Fresh off three years of sea duty, he looked at this tour as an opportunity to spend more time with his family, and he and Rosie made that happen. They participated in school events and volunteered for school activities. They supported their children in school activities, they joined the First Baptist Church of Kingsville, and they got involved in the local community.

At NAS Kingsville, Holbrook served as a Logistics Specialist for NAS Kingsville's Air Operations Department. Among his many duties, Holbrook played a critical role in managing logistics for the 2012 Wings Over South Texas air show, and was instrumental in the huge success of the show. He was actively involved in the command's Junior Enlisted Association, and he volunteered his off-duty time participating in a number of community relations activities in Kleberg and Nueces Counties.

"Petty Officer Holbrook was a valued member of the NAS Kingsville team who loved the Navy and the Nation he defended," said NAS Kingsville Commanding Officer Capt. Christopher Misner. "He will be missed by all of us at NAS Kingsville. He was a shipmate to all who wear the cloth of this great nation, and he served with Honor, Courage and Commitment. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Holbrook family, for we share their loss."

Funeral services and burial in Sulligent, Ala. Are Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at 11:00 am with full military honors graveside service and burial to follow in Macedonia Cemetery. Bro. Stephen Cantrell will officiate.

Debby Stevens
I'm a Christian, and I'm a daughter of Allan B. Holbrook, now in heaven. My married name is Debby Stevens.
My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
