Lorina Sandifer
Lorina Sandifer's father was Percy Seaberry and her mother was Jannie Sandifer. At the time of her death, she was married to Sherman Nelson. Lorina had eight children, one of whom was Robert Sandifer (1983-1994) aka "Yummy" for his love of cookies as a young child. Robert was only 11 years old in 1994 when he was murdered by members of his own Chicago street gang called the Black Disciples. Robert Sandifer was known for being particularly reckless, often getting caught by the police and already had a criminal record at 11 years old. On August 28th, 1994, Robert opened fire with a 9mm semiautomatic pistol in the Roseland neighborhood in Chicago. He injured two children and killed 14-year-old Shavon Dean. After this event, Yummy's fellow gang members decided that he was a liability, so 14 year old Cragg and 16 year old Derrick Hardaway were ordered by the Black Disciples to kill Robert, and they shot him in the back of the head at a railroad underpass at East 108th Street and South Dauphin Avenue. The shooter was sentenced to 60 years in prison for murder and will be eligible for parole in 2024. The get-away driver was sentenced to 45 years in prison and will be eligible for parole in 2016. See a 2001 Time magazine article about Yummy's murder and its consequences on the community at Murder in Miniature. Also see The only way to get out is to die for more details. Two years after her son's murder, Lorina Sandifer was 32 years old and changing her life. She was a recovering cocaine addict who had previously fallen into prostitution, and would often lose and regain custody of her children. About 11 years after the murder of her son, Lorina died in the hospital due to complications after surgery.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
