Theodore Thomas Grimshaw Coleman was born to Edward Bennett Coleman (1858 - 1954) and Sarah Jane Pearce Bone (1856 - 1936). Both of his parents had been born in Cornwall, England. He had eight siblings: Edward, Emma, Fernleigh, Julius, Richard, Sydney, Percy, and Sarah "Sadie" Coleman.
Theodore Coleman married Nellie Beatrice Violet Manners in 1912 in Victoria, Australia. They had three children: Thomas, Hazel, and Mena Coleman.
