"Leave It To Beaver" was a hit show in the 1950s (1957 - 1963). Everyone who had a television (and some who went to the neighbor's house to watch) saw the show every week. June, Ward, Wally, and "Beaver" were almost like members of the family, they were so familiar.

Actor Tony Dow played the teen age "Wally". While he had no previous acting experience, his lack of background meant that he portrayed Wally realistically. And yesterday, "Wally" died at age 77. Another era ends. RIP Tony/Wally. Remember Wally.

Very sad! I grew to adulthood in the 40's and 50's, and most of the radio and TV personalities from that era are gone now.

I didn't see the original programs. I was too young since I was born at the tail end of 1960. However, I watched several programs in syndication in the mornings during the 1970s when I was on school vacations. I really liked Leave It to Beaver. I also remember watching Bewitched, Daktari, and My 3 Sons. And Gilligan's Island and Beverly Hillbillies. Nice, clean programs which is still my preference, warts and all.

Marion Mcclung yes me 2. Although we did not realise at the time how male dominance, sexist and degrading to woman, that they ate a good example is bewitch. Even though they were good fun to watch for the time.👍

In my humble opinion, this was the doofiest looking high school boy on television. To be fair though, none of the black and white TV families had attractive kids. Father Know Best was hard to watch for sure.

Tony's father was architect John Stevens Dow (1908 - 1987) and his mother was Muriel Virginia Montrose (1906 - 2001). He had one brother, Dion. In the 1950 federal census, Tony was 5 and living in Los Angeles California with his parents John (41) and Muriel (43). Also in the household was brother Dion (18). Father John was a "building contractor" in an office. No one else in the household was working. As a teen, Tony was a Junior Olympics diving champion. Tony portrayed "Wally Cleaver" in the iconic television sitcom "Leave It to Beaver" from 1957 to 1963. He didn't have any other acting experience at the time. Dow married Carol Marlow in June 1969 and their marriage ended in 1978. They had one child, Christopher, born in 1973. In June 1980, Dow married Lauren Shulkind, to whom he was married until his death. After "Leave It To Beaver", Tony appeared on many television shows, including a stint on a reprise of "Leave It To Beaver" in the 1980s. See Tony Dow: Obituary

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
