All we need is love! Sept 30th is National Love People Day. Half of the people at a family reunion almost 100 yrs ago - imagine how many more people there are to love now.

Very early technology made it harder to capture smiles

One common explanation for the lack of smiles in old photos is that long exposure times — the time a camera needs to take a picture — made it important for the subject of a picture to stay as still as possible. That way, the picture wouldn't look blurry. It had nothing to do with how they felt. Of course, if people did their research like I did, they would know this.

My grandparents said family reunions used to be a week-long event. People would bring their campers, park for the week and just visit with family, the kids play together. Then it became just a weekend event. Now you're lucky to get anyone there for an afternoon. We've really lost sight of what's important. People now have difficulty just holding conversations, "visiting" like the old folks do. It's just sad.

It wasn't a common practice to smile in photos til the 1930s and '40s. I'm impressed they could gather together the whole family like this!

I love this photo smiles or not! Can't imagine getting this many of my family in one place these days. Everyone is always busy, or don't care, or is fighting with half the family! I would love to have a family reunion as big as this without all the technology and just sit, eat, drink, play games and just chat!

Fiona Teale last Sunday we had a cousins virtual reunion on zoom. One cousin has an account for multiple people. our last reunion was over 10 years. It was great. The virus has brought us together. There are other venues to gather. Try it we will do it again next month.

WONDERFUL picture, and how great to have that many family members at a reunion!!! Sad to think that even the small children in this photo are all in their graves by now. Many of those little boys probably fought in World War II, and the girls may have been "Rosie the Riveters" in war factories. Also very sad to know that they all had the Great Depression in their near future! How many survived it?

peoples families thought they were beautiful. What if someone said your kids or someone you loved were ugly?? People can change their looks. Stupid is forever.

Saralyn Bennett Brantley, I’ve never seen a comment such as yours on Facebook.

Rude.
Stand for an hour at the door of a Walmart and watch people going in and out. You'll see plenty of "ugly" people. People don't look any prettier or uglier than they ever did, but the hairstyles back then for the women were extremely unflattering. Few people smiled in photos back then, and there are just as many folks who were born with a "resting b**** face" now as there were then.

Perhaps you watch too much tv and think all nurses, teachers, cops, lawyers, etc. are supposed to be at least good-looking, if not gorgeous...especially all those "teens" in shows who are actually in the mid to late 20's, but have perfect hair and make-up and very fashionable clothes.

One thing that is interesting is how few of these people were obese. Maybe 5 adults and one chubby child out of the whole group.

Saralyn Bennett Brantley i tell my third graders that sometimes we think things but don’t have to “say” them. A good test is to ask oneself is the thought true, kind, necessary? If not at least two, don’t bother.

Saralyn Bennett Brantley with that many people in the family (pic only shows half that were at the reunion) you might actually be a distant relative of one or more of them. I thought people your age were taught if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. You are probably also one of those people who would be the first to get their knickers in a twist if one of the younger generations said something rude. What a nasty, dried up bitter old hag you grew up to be, you’re as pleasant as you are pretty.....

Family Reunions
Family reunions are the time to reunite with family members you haven't seen in a long while, and to meet distant cousins you might have never known existed.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
