In 1909, garment workers (shirtwaist workers) struck for better conditions and pay. These women were on strike and selling newspapers to support themselves.
The New York Shirtwaist Worker's Strike was settled in February of 1910 but about one year later the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire killed 146 people, which resulted in even more reforms.
