According to the 1940 census, he only attended school through the 4th grade. In 1917, he was 24 years old, single, living at Peoria Heights, Peoria, Illinois as a stockman for the Avery Company, when he registered for the war. In 1925, he lived in Lincoln, Kansas and worked as a machinest. He was married to Mildred and had two children, Rayburn and Imogene. Four years later he had another son, Virgil. In 1935, he owned his house at 614 West Day Street, in Herington, Dickinson County, Kansas. He worked as a machinest with a tender truck.
