Dorothy T Callas of Middletown, Orange County, NY was born on March 8, 1928, and died at age 75 years old on March 20, 2003 in Middletown.
Yakinthi "Jackie" Callas, sister to renowned opera singer Maria Callas (1923 - 1977), was born to Evangelia "Litsa" Dimitriadou (1894 - 1982) and George Kalogeropoulos (1887 - 1971). Both of her parents were of Greek heritage and her father shortened the surname to "Kalos" and then "Callas" in order to make it "more manageable". In addition to sister Maria, Yakinthi had a brother, Vassilis Callas (1920 - 1922).
A book titled "Sisters" was published in 1989, detailing the life of Maria Callas as viewed through "Jackie's" eyes. The synopsis of the book says:
"Maria Callas became the greatest opera star of the 20th century. At La Scala, Milan, they say that in opera there are two eras, BC and AC, before Callas and after Callas. Her talent brought her fame, wealth and the attention of the public. But it also led to family trauma, abandoned marriage, a failed affair with Onassis and terrible loneliness. Ghost written by David Sweetman, this details the personal memoirs of Jackie Callas, Maria's sister and closest surviving relative. It covers the early years before Maria's talent transformed her into the legendary Diva, and the painful price there was to pay for everyone caught up with the legend."
Jackie survived Maria and was left Maria's estate, along with their mother, Evangelina. However, Maria's first husband produced a will (signed in 1954) that left everything to him. The trio finally settled on a 50/50 split, settling out of court. See Mystery of the Callas millions . . . .
Vassilis was the son of George Kalogeropoulos (c. 1881–1972) and Elmina Evangelia "Litsa", née Demes, originally Dimitriadou (c. 1894–1982), and was the brother to opera singer Maria Anna Cecilia Sophie Kalogeropoulos aka Maria Callas, and Yakinthi "Jackie" (born 1917).
He passed away in the summer of 1922 due to meningitis.
